Here we are again – facing a new year, full of opportunity! If you are like most people looking at the blank pages of the 2019 calendar, you care considering your resolutions.
How can you make your life better, more productive, or more satisfying this year? Our decisions often not only affect ourselves, but our families as well.
For dog owners, this is a great chance to make some changes which will positively affect not only your own life, but will keep your dog happier as well. Here are three New Year’s resolutions that every dog owner should consider:
Get Back to Good Habits
We can all get a little lax with the rules over time. Although we know what is good for us, we often find ourselves procrastinating, sleeping in too late, or eating things we shouldn’t. As hard as it is for us to maintain good habits, it is exceptionally difficult for your dog to understand inconsistency from their favorite human.
Do a quick review of the behaviors you expect from your dog, and be honest about how well you support your animal in understanding the rules.
It is never too late to train an adult dog, or to go back and re-learn the behaviors necessary to maintain a happy life – and one which gives your dog the structure and rules they need.
Spend More Time Exercising
Perhaps the number one resolution among humans, this one is easy to incorporate with your pet. After all, with many pet owners working long hours and juggling busy schedules, you may find yourself simply letting the dog out into the backyard instead of taking him out for a stroll around the neighborhood.
But you aren’t the only one who should be moving more – your dog needs daily exercise to maintain the right physical and emotional balance. Scheduling in a daily, leisurely stroll with your dog will be great for him, great for you, and great for your relationship.
Did You Know? Your dog should get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day – and some breeds, such as hunting dogs, need even more!
Owners who spend long days at work may also want to consider doggy day care a few days a week, to keep their dog active and socialized.
Explore More
Too many of us get up early, rush out the door, work all day, come home late, collapse on the couch, then go to bed – only to do it again tomorrow.
Weekends are often reserved for chores and errands – all of which can leave our dogs feeling ignored every day of the week. Owners should thoughtfully consider ways to add more leisure time to schedules, to get outside, explore and relax. Making a conscious decision to explore new places on the weekends is a great way to stay motivated and have something to look forward to.
Whether headed to the beach or walking around a nearby city you’ve never seen, a change of scenery is good for everyone – including your dog!
The Sarasota area has several beaches, and many local restaurants even allow well-behaved dogs to sit with you at an outdoor table. From bay front parks to boating on the Bay, this area offers countless opportunities to take your dog on adventures, and they will love the time spent with you.
