Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, breeds and personalities. When looking for a new furry family member, you may simply go to the animal shelter and adopt a dog who needs a home, regardless of breed. However, many prospective dog owners are looking for a specific dog based upon their home life. For instance, a family with children may be looking for a very docile dog, such as a golden Lab; while someone looking for a companion dog may opt for a shih tzu. Many people also choose a pet based upon the residence they are bringing them to – in other words, if they live in an apartment they may look for a smaller dog, while those with acreage may prefer a larger animal. Here are the most popular dogs in America, in a variety of sizes.
Most Popular Dogs – Small Breeds
If you are looking for a dog to occupy a small living space, or need a companion dog for an elderly family member, these diminutive dogs make a great choice.
- Pomeranians: These little guys are exceptionally friendly, and love humans with all of their hearts. Bold, happy and playful, a Pomeranian is a great dog for those who can walk them and play with them – and weighing in at an average 6 pounds, are easy to have around the house.
- Yorkshire Terriers: Energetic and intelligent, Yorkshire terriers pack a lot of personality into a little package, with their maximum size being 7 pounds. These are the smallest of the terriers, but seem to be unaware of their size. They can be a bit dominant, so be aware when bringing into a multi-dog household.
- Maltese: This tiny dog breed (also around 7 pounds) has been a favorite of humans since the ancient Greeks – likely because of their playful, sweet and trusting relationships with their owners.
Medium Sized Breeds

- Australian Shepherds: Weighing in between 35-70 pounds, Australian shepherds are among the smartest and hardest working dogs around. They are incredibly intelligent and loyal animals, but because they are bred to do a job, they can get bored without your interaction.
- Boykin Spaniels: These dogs are intelligent, loyal and obedient, but their most dominant trait may be their willingness and desire to please their owners. Between 25-40 pounds, they are on the smaller side of the medium sized breeds.
- Bassett Hounds: These popular dogs may look a bit mournful, but they are actually among the most pleasant, loving and easy going breeds. They can range from 45- 75 pounds, with females typically smaller than males.
Large Breeds
- Labrador Retrievers: Perhaps one of the most popular dogs in the country, Labrador retrievers are trusting, patient, gentle, intelligent and trusting. They make great family dogs if you have enough room for them in your home.
- German Shepherds: These regal dogs are highly versatile, meaning that they can be a trusted family pet or a vigilant guard dog. They make excellent service dogs as well, as they are intelligent and loyal. They are courageous and intensely loyal, always keeping watch on their humans. Shepherds can range up to 90 pounds or more.
- Golden Retrievers: While their name comes from their beautiful coat, owners of these dogs also realize that the name could refer to their loving and loyal heart of gold. Goldens make amazing family dogs with a patient, gentle and obedient temperament, but unlike other large dogs are primarily an indoor pet when not engaged in exercise.
