Owning a dog adds joy and unconditional love into your life – after all, dogs are loyal companions. However, sometimes our furry friends can make us sneeze and itch. A large portion of the US population–close to 50%–experiences some kind of allergy. Out of those who suffer from allergies, 3 out of 10 have bad reactions to dogs and cats.

Why do animals make so many of us sneeze? Dander (a.k.a dead skin cells) is the true culprit, rather than fur as many people believe. When a dog sheds, allergen particles cling to the hairs and are released into the air, settling on the floor and furniture. Because all dogs have skin, it is not possible to completely eliminate the chance of allergies. There are, however, certain breeds that are less likely to cause a reaction. These breeds are often small, which cuts down on the amount of dander they produce. These breeds shed very little or simply have no fur.

Here are 6 breeds that will reduce the amount of sneezing you do and increase your cuddle time with your pet!

  1. Soft-coated Wheaten terrier: These happy pups are extremely loyal to their owners. Hailing from Ireland as a breed of farm dog, Wheaten terriers make a great family companion – although you should be prepared for some classic terrier stubbornness. Wheatens shed very little, which helps make them less prone to causing allergies. However, their silky coat needs regular maintenance.
  2. Portuguese Water Dog: If you are searching for a hardworking, loving dog that is always up for adventure (and is less likely to make you itch or sniffle), look no further than the Portuguese water dog! As their name implies, they were bred to assist fishermen with their daily tasks, and thus are easily trained for a variety of behaviors and tricks.
  3. Bichon Frise: These adorable fluffballs will brighten your day with their playful and curious nature. Their soft, thin fur rarely causes an allergic reaction, but feels wonderful when you snuggle them.
  4. Chinese Crested: This tiny toy breed is a great option for apartment living. They are lively, but can spend hours lazing around in bed with you. They are mostly hairless, with tufts of hair on their hands and paws–perfect to decrease the spread of fur and dander.
  5. Afghan Hound: If you have the time to own one of these beauties, you will find it absolutely worth it. They are fiercely loyal, dignified and intelligent. As a hunting breed they require a large area to run in each day, and their long silky coats need significant upkeep. Put in the effort, and they will be devoted to you for their entire lives.
  6. American Hairless Terrier: Like the Chinese crested, this dog is hairless and as close to hypoallergenic as you can get. They are smart and mischievous, full of energy, and a great companion for an active lifestyle. Be sure to apply sunscreen before heading outside for some fun to protect their skin.
