Our dogs can sense when we are about to leave for a trip–they see us packing, sense the excitement as the time to go draws near. Having to leave Rover behind can be difficult; so why not bring them along? Vacationing together can be an amazing adventure, but there are pros and cons to weigh when choosing whether to bring your pet.

Benefits of Bringing your Dog

  • It’s fun! You can go on so many adventures and have a wonderful time exploring the country (or world) together.
  • Bringing your pet provides peace of mind. They’re getting the best care with you, because you know their routines and schedules. This way you can avoid the cost and stress of boarding your dog, wondering if they are getting quality care.
  • Exploring an unfamiliar place can be exciting, but also frightening. When you bring your dog along, you feel more protected as you tour new places.
  • Your dog will have an amazing time taking in new sights and smells–they will provide an excellent enrichment experience!

Cons of Vacationing with Pets

  • While you will save money not having to pay for boarding, travelling with your pet can also be expensive. Flights and hotels often have pet fees, and pet-friendly flights can be more expensive than others.
  • Vacations are also more challenging to organize when you throw a pet into the mix.
Travelling with a dog can make a long drive even longer, since they will need you to stop often for breaks and exercise.
  • If your dog is destructive, they can cause damage to hotel rooms, resulting in replacement fees for you.
  • Pets can limit what you can do. Many parks, beaches, and other sites may not allow dogs. Restaurants rarely allow pets in dining areas unless they have outdoor seating. Be sure to plan and find places they can join you. Otherwise, they may have to sit out some adventures.
  • You need to plan your day trips around their schedule. Their needs will prevent you from being able to take a full-day excursion away from your pet.

Pet-Friendly Hotels

While you should always check with the specific hotel you are looking to stay in while vacationing, there are certain franchises that tend to be more pet-friendly than others.

  • Motel 6, while not the most upscale chain on this list, allows pets at every location for free, with no weight restrictions. The American Kennel Club uses them as their official lodgings.
  • Best Western allows pets at many locations throughout the US. Daily fees and refundable security deposit may apply, but they allow a wide range of dogs up to 80 lbs in their rooms.
  • Choice Hotels includes Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality Inn, Clarion, and more common hotel brands. They are widely available throughout the US, and you can easily find a location within your price range.
  • Extended Stay America allows pets, but are more restrictive than other hotels. Only small- to medium-sized dogs are permitted; large dogs may also be allowed, but that is subject to the decision of the hotel manager. Non-refundable damage and service fees will apply monthly.

Air BNBs are a great way to go if you are looking for less expensive accommodations. Be sure to check with the owner’s set preferences to make sure they allow pets, and note any restrictions.
