According to the CDC, autism spectrum condition affects 1 in 59 children in the United States. While an autistic child’s needs cost their parents between $4,000 and $6,000 annually, a severe case could cost up to $60,000 per year all things considered. Of course, those children grow up to be adults. Although most learn to function very well in society, some do still experience many forms of social anxiety and difficulty in communication. Not surprisingly to dog lovers, however, those with this condition do seem to develop very special bonds with the canine species; making autism assistance dogs a popular form of therapy for people of all ages.

As if you needed another reason to love dogs, their ability to relieve stress and bring joy to those struggling is a true gift. Here are just a few ways that autism assistance dogs can change a life:

Cherished friendship: The inability to effectively communicate and meaningfully connect to the outside world can make life very lonely, especially for a child. Autism assistance dogs provide the unconditional, non-verbal love and friendship which can be a lifeline to anyone struggling with fitting in and finding a friend. Dogs don’t yell, dogs don’t judge, and dogs don’t get frustrated. They just offer love and acceptance.

Playing games: To a child who is struggling with taking turns or sharing, playing simple games with their dog is a fantastic way to learn. After all, the dog is never hurt, angry or offended, as can happen with other children. This allows autistic children to learn without the anxiety of other’s reactions.

Conquering fear: Dogs offer a calming presence in any situation, but especially so to those with autism. Faithful canine companions have made trips to the doctor, starting school, or being out in public far easier for children and adults alike, as the simple act of petting a dog has been proven to minimze anxiety levels. In fact, the simple act of a dog placing its head in his owners lap has been shown to significantly reduce stress and anxiety.

Trying new things: For many children with autism, familiarity is their comfort. Because of this, they often necessarily follow strict schedules and routines. Intrducing a dog into the family will inspire the child to try new things without even realizing that is what they are doing – playing in the yard, running with the dog, or even just venturing further than they even have before. This will allow the family more of a sense of normalcy as well, as they can often go on day trips, often impossible before the dog arrived. Children seem to think of the autism assistance dogs as their “Superman’s cape”.

Verbal improvement: Working with dogs seems to inspire children and adults alike to work on their verbal skills. Because they have such a strong connection to the dog – something they don’t have with humans – they want to communicate in as many ways as possible.

Making the family stronger: The stress levels in the home of an autistic child are often greatly diminished when a dog is introduced. With the dogs calming influence, the child is less likely to act out, have tantrums, or retreat. This not only helps the parents to more calmly run the home and family, but brings a sense of peace to the overall homelife that perhaps didn’t exist before.

Autism support dogs are no special breed, any loving dog good with children should have the same effect. By visiting your local animal shelter (such as the Sarasota or Manatee Humane Society) you can save a dog’s life – then watch them help to change yours .
