Finding great Sarasota dog trainers may be harder than you think. Many people love dogs, and many people may have training centers. But which is right for your dog?
The first question to ask yourself is if you are looking for private obedience training classes, or if you and your dog should join a class. There really is no wrong answer to this question – it comes down to preference. While group classes are generally less expensive than private lessons, owners may not be able to attend the scheduled classes. And although private lessons may sound great, group classes offer the benefits of your dog being able to learn behaviors while in the presence of other pooches; meaning that they will learn these behaviors with a lot of distraction, and they can also learn socialization skills.
No matter your choice, you still need to locate the right trainer for the job.
If your puppy seems to be shy or skittish, a large group class may not be the right choice. (However, you can ask the Sarasota dog trainers on your list if they offer classes which cater to such animals.)
Board and train programs are another option which may be right to you. These programs allow you to leave your dog for a period of time (typically 2 weeks) and when he comes home, he brings all of his new manners with him. Although this may most likely cost you a few extra dollars, it is a great option for those who simply do not have the time to participate in the training of their dog. The dog will stay with a trainer and learn all the appropriate behaviors. At the end of the training period, the trainer will work with you to teach you how the commands work so as to stay consistent with your dog. Many board and train programs will allow you to visit during the training period to observe or participate at certain points.
Ask for References
A great way to find Sarasota dog trainers is through referrals and references. Referrals may come from your veterinarian or a friend you meet out walking your dog. No matter where you get the reference, be sure that they have first hand experience with the trainer or training facility – preferably with their own dog’s training. Many people just pass along a name without experience, and this may not work well for your dog.
Once you have a list of a few possible trainers, visit their facility and discuss their methods with them. One of the biggest things you will want to establish is how the trainers motivate their dogs to learn. Although experts endorse various methods, most agree that positive reinforcement and rewards are more successful – and kind – than any class which relies on punishment for teaching.
Sarasota Dog Trainers
Of course you want a dog trainer with experience, but the individual with the most experience might not be your best choice. For instance, if you meet a trainer with 10 years experience who shares your philosophy on dogs, this may be a better choice than the stern and unforgiving 30-yr trainer.
When you visit a dog training center, in addition to observing the facilities, you should pay close attention to the trainer’s rapport – both with you and your canine. You don’t have to be lifelong friends, but you should feel comfortable with the person who will be interacting with your dog. And as many dog owners will tell you, your dog tends to have amazing intuition. Choose someone your dog seems to take to and trust. Watch a couple of classes to observe the trainer’s demeanor around dogs. Ask about their experience with your dog’s breed, and to explain any challenges you may encounter.
Your perfect trainer should be knowledgeable, respectful and easy-going. If the dogs in the class don’t seem to like or respond to the trainer, you may want to move on. Of course, if you are watching a class for aggressive or reactive dogs, these interactions are no the best way to choose.
At Gulf Coast K9 Dog Trainers, we welcome your visit and look forward to meeting you and your dog.
