There are hundreds of dog breeds in the world, and each has been carefully bred over time for specific characteristics or job proficiencies. When it comes to US families, a few rise above the rest as the most popular dog breeds to own. Here’s what to expect in 2022– though most come as no surprise!

Yorkshire Terrier

These small dogs have been quite popular for a while and will remain on the list in 2022. They hardly shed, making them ideal for people who want a dog but aren’t keen on vacuuming daily to clean up fur. Because of their small size, it doesn’t take much to tire them out–a plus if you don’t have time each day to dedicate to the hours-long activity that huskies and other working breeds need. Yorkies do need regular trips to the groomer to keep their coats looking their best, though, so keep those additional costs in mind.

Husky
Yes, even here in South Florida, huskies have grown in popularity as a family dog. Though they were bred to withstand freezing temperatures in the North, they can adapt to our tropical weather. To keep them healthy, be sure always to have a lot of water available, so they stay hydrated, and limit the amount of time they spend outside during the hottest part of the day. It’s best to exercise them in the early morning and late evening when temperatures are cooler.

Corgi
Corgis have raced to popularity in recent years in the US, and it’s not hard to see why–their soft coats, big ears, and short stature make them extremely adorable. They were bred as herding dogs for cattle in Wales (their full breed name is the Pembroke Welsh Corgi), and as such, they are energetic and intelligent. Corgis need around one hour of exercise a day. You will have a loyal and affectionate pet for many years if you can manage that requirement.

Bulldog
If your family tends to be calmer or don’t have as much time for exercise, a bulldog (the American Bulldog, English Bulldog, or French Bulldog) is a great choice. These pets are content to live a luxurious life indoors, for the most part, enjoying a snuggle on the couch with you instead of hours at a dog park. Note that these dogs are brachycephalic (aka smush-faced), and thus have special needs for exercise and breathing.

Golden and Labrador Retriever
Arguably the most popular American family dogs, the Golden and Labrador Retrievers remain in the top breeds to choose from. They are playful and loving, always ready for a game of fetch or tug, making them excellent family pets. So long as you don’t mind the frequent vacuuming from their constant shedding, you will love your Golden.

German Shepherd
If you are looking for an unwaveringly loyal dog who will protect your family for all their days, you cannot go wrong with a German Shepherd. There is a reason they are a top choice for K9 and military units–they are incredibly smart, capable, and protective. Keep up with their high energy needs, and you will have a fiercely loving member of your family.
