We love summer, but one of the true downsides to this time of year is the amount of insects which plague us.
Summer pests can cause a wide range of distress, from simply being annoying to being hazardous to our health. Insects and pests affect your canine in the same way. Some insects will simply drive your dog to distraction, and some may cause real harm. Here is a rundown of some of summer’s worst insect offenders, and what you can do to protect your dog.
Summer Pests to Look out For
- FLEAS: You may have heard that flea saliva is one of the most irritating substances on earth. Their bites always itch and can easily become infected. Fleas can survive virtually anywhere, and are found in cars and homes alike. Not only are fleas worrisome for dogs, but humans are often affected when their pet gets fleas. Vets report that most pet owners insist their animal doesn’t have fleas. But especially in the spring and summer months, without a prescription flea product applied correctly, chances are excellent your animal does harbor these insects.
- TICKS: When it comes to insects which spread disease, there are none more prolific than ticks. There are many species of ticks, and many are linked to serious illnesses such as Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Ehrlichiosis. On the positive side, many ticks are not capable of surviving indoors – but you still want to avoid them getting on your pet. Like fleas bites., tick bites can get itchy and infected, but the bites are not the biggest issue. Check your dog for ticks twice daily, and if he is lethargic, sick or sore, bring him to the vet. Dogs should be on medication throughout tick season.
- MOSQUITOS: In the Sarasota and Bradenton area, everyone hates the mosquitos, which seem to swarm everywhere this time of year. Although mosquito bites are annoying, the biggest threat to your dog is that their bites can cause heartworm, which can prove fatal to your pet. Ask your vet if your flea and tick treatment also protects against mosquito bites, and be sure your dog is on heartworm medication at all times.
- FLIES: Flies are everywhere in the summer, and if you bring your dog to a local dog park, are likely to be swarming. They often bite dogs ears and face, and then feast on their blood may even lay eggs in the wound, resulting in maggots. (gross, we know!) If you see evidence of this on your dog, clean it as best you can and bring him to a vet for additional treatment.
- ANTS: Have you ever stepped on an ant pile and suffered multiple bites? There are few things more uncomfortable, especially if the notorious fire ants are involved. A dog will walk right through an ant pile and not realize the danger. While there have been a few accounts of a pet going into shock after a severe attack of ants. most dogs will simply be miserable. Your vet should be able to give them a shot to help ease the pain and discomfort until it subsides.
- YELLOW JACKETS: Because they nest in the grass and are known to be aggressive, a yellow jacket sting is not uncommon to see on canines in the summer. These stings and bites are painful and can be itchy, but generally do not cause long-term damage. As always, keep an eye on your pet for any adverse reaction.
